Classic clashes: Stransky boots Boks to glory

The Springboks and All Blacks will renew hostilities when they clash in the Rugby Championship this week, but here we rewind to 1995 when a Joel Stransky drop goal won South Africa the Rugby World Cup.

Undoubtedly one of the finest sporting moments in the history of the country, the Boks’ World Cup triumph over the All Blacks at Ellis Park will forever be etched into the folklore of this fixture.

With the score 9-9 at full time, Andrew Mehrtens put New Zealand in front early in the first half of extra time with a 55m penalty, but Stransky made it 12-12 before half time.

Then, two minutes into the second half of extra time, Joost van der Westhuizen sent the ball back to Stransky, who slotted the drop goal that wrote his name into rugby history.
